Bulletin CB#2008-4 - Exception for Consumers in Disaster Areas
Unitrin Direct has taken the following action to comply with Bulletin CB#2008-4
- A moratorium has been placed on cancellations and nonrenewals. For any cancellation or nonrenewal notices issued on or after June 10, 2008 on any in-force policy issued to our insureds are being withdrawn and reinstated without lapse in coverage. We will not be issuing any new cancellation or nonrenewal notices on any in-force policy issued to our insureds until August 18, 2008 or later if deemed reasonable given the insured's circumstances.
- Unitrin Direct will grant to affected policyholder an extension of any and all policy provisions or other requirements that impose a time limit for our insured or claimant to perform any act, including the submission of a claim of proof of loss, reporting of information, submission of bills, or payment of funds. The extension will be for a minimum of 60 days from the last day allowed or required under the terms of the policy or allowed or required by Unitrin Direct, or longer if deemed reasonable given the individuals circumstances.
- Unitrin Direct are providing insureds an extension of 60 days to make repairs on affected property if they cannot be completed within the time period under the policy, or within the 90 day time period for repairs prior to termination due to conditions of the property.
- Unitrin Direct will not cancel policies during this time period affecting property due to "increase in the risk originally accepted".
- Unitrin Direct will consider exception to policy or contract requirements, or to other rating and underwriting rules not otherwise listed herein, when such contractual requirements or rating or underwriting rules are not met as a result of the disaster.
- Unitrin Direct has posted a notice informing our customers of the availability of the Illinois Division of insurance. The notice advises Illinois consumers of the availability of filing a complaint regarding any disaster-related dispute or issue.
